Three tales from the original master of horror fiction, Edgar Allan Poe! Included in this collection are “The Raven”, “The Black Cat” and “The Cask Of Amontillado.”

Narrator Wayne June assures us that he’s done his research on this new series of definitive Edgar Allan Poe readings, and in listening you’ll absolutely have to agree. Place names and pronunciations are perfect - accents and action are exact. You can often tell when a narrator is bluffing it, surfing through the sentences blindly. That absolutely doesn’t happen here. In Poe’s most famous narrative poem The Raven, for instance, there’s nary a line that doesn’t contain an archaic word that’d flummox. June never falters. He’s got them all sussed. The Black Cat too, has never sounded better. June captures the sympathetic first person narrative and then drives home the barbarity flawlessly. Light accents make “The Cask Of Amontillado”, the most difficult of the three tales here, flow like an old vintage newly discovered. There are already many versions of these three classics available on audio, but I’d venture not a single one could come even close to match any of these three. Wayne June’s voice is perfectly matched to the melancholic material. As was the case with his superlative Lovecraft recordings, nobody else’s voice is more more morbidly macabre than is Wayne June’s. This is essential listening.

Here in this terrific audiobook are two tales of horror that we declare to be SFFaudio Essential.
Narrator Wayne June's voice will give you the absolute lurking creeps. His deep raspy voice is also used to good effect for all the narration, when he is infrequently called upon to do the voices of the damned he distinguishes between them well. This is the best Lovecraft adaptation to audio I've heard and more frightening than hell. For full effect a listener should turn down the lights, put on a good set of headphones, sit in a lonesome room with a view of the sea and pray that Lovecraft was just making all this stuff up.

But on iTunes, Wayne can be found on the audiobooks section, reading H.P. Lovecraft's stories. And he's reading stories I've read several times. Because I'm a nerd.

But Wayne sounds like a re-animated zombie being controlled by a Deep One. His voice is 3am on a winter morning on a forgotten street. It's a cold wind blowing through a shunned house on the outskirts of town. It's darkness having a nightmare and talking in its sleep in a cheap hotel -- and you've got the room next door.

And he manages to bring out details in these stories I've missed, even on re-readings. What happens to the clerk at the National Food chain store in Innsmouth when the mutant inhabitants rise from the waters for...wait, what in the f**k brought them flopping, hissing, and sliming from the black reef?

The "Innsmouth look" was the closest (and cleverest) way H.P. could express his revulsion for the mixing of the white and...well, every other race. "Attack the story like a radiant suicide", said H.P. And he did.

So far I've heard Wayne read "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" and "Dagon". The former is a long, carefully paced story that builds to a hysterical "climax", and then has a truly downbeat, horrifying coda. "Dagon", as nerds like I know, if a super-short gut-punch of a story, and serves as disturbing background for what's just happened in "Shadow". The way Wayne expresses the narrator's psyche finally unraveling in the last lines of "Dagon" -- and I heard it while riding in a New York cab -- made me squirm.
Highly recommended."

Wayne June, who reads all six available volumes, has once again done a magnificent job in bringing this audiobook to creeping, slithering life. Lovecraft's prose can sometimes be intimidatingly dense and complex but Wayne June paces the readings perfectly, allowing for all the charged emotional gravitas that these stories require.
"Shadow Over Innsmouth" is a tale of earth-shattering psychological horror set in a shunned and decaying coastal fishing town. This story could easily be destroyed by an over-the-top or uncommitted reading but Mr June convincingly conveys the narrator's growing unease and eventual blind panic as he slowly uncovers the grim secret of Innsmouth and pieces together the horrid truth of Obed Marsh's legacy.

These readings... have proved to be exceptional and seriously deserve shelf-space in the home of anyone who appreciates high quality tales of fear, apprehension and (mostly) unseen terrors. Rated 5 Stars

Another Masterpiece
As a lifelong Lovecraft fan, I am incredibly grateful that Audible has provided "The Dark Worlds of H.P. Lovecraft” series. I feel Wayne June’s voice and characterization lend themselves perfectly to Lovecraft’s writings in the previous volumes, and the same holds true for Volume 4… I highly recommend the series to any reader, whether they are new to Lovecraft’s work or long-time fans, and I eagerly await any future offerings.
